Must-Have Color Run Accessories

You’ve probably noticed that a Color Run isn’t the typical 5k race. Getting ready for an event with colorful powder throws calls for a bit of extra prep. Whether you’re a first-timer or just need a refresher, we’ve rounded up our favorite Color Run must-have items to have a blast at your event!

1. Race Number

Your race number helps event organizers identify you and keep track of your participation in the race.

Many Color Runs are timed events, and your race number is often linked to a timing chip or system that records your race time or finish position.

Race numbers also help event organizers manage the flow of participants, especially at the starting and finish lines.

When it comes to dressing for the Color Run, white clothing is the perfect canvas. For maximum color impact, a classic white T-shirt is the perfect choice.

Look for a T-shirt made from breathable cotton material, which not only provides comfort during the race but also is the best material if you want the color powder washed out easily afterward. Or, you can preserve the color (and memories) in your T-shirt!

While the color powder is designed to be non-permanent and wash out of most fabrics, it’s best to leave your expensive or delicate clothing items at home to avoid any potential damage.

3. Running Shoes

The right running shoes for a Color Run will let you run, dance, and celebrate in comfort. Go with an older broken-in pair that you don’t mind getting coated in vibrant hues as you dash through the color zones.

Obviously, choose a pair that provides good support and cushioning for your feet. Lightweight and breathable options will keep you cooler and comfortable, even as you tackle the colorful course.

After crossing the finish line, shake out any excess color powder to prevent it from spreading. Then, toss your shoes in your washer (without any other clothes). Place them in a mesh laundry bag to protect them during the wash cycle, and use a gentle detergent on a cold water setting.

Once washed, air dry your shoes away from direct heat to preserve their shape and integrity.

4. Cash or Card

Carry some cash or a card for any purchases you may want to make during the event. Food, drinks, and merchandise are common at color runs. Many color runs are hosted as fundraisers. So, you’ll want to be prepared for on-site fundraising opportunities as well.

5. Sunglasses

When getting ready for the Color Run, don’t forget about your eyes. It’s highly recommended to wear sunglasses or goggles to shield your eyes from color powder.

During the Color Run, you’ll be showered with vibrant powder at different points along the route. While it adds to the fun, it can also pose a risk of eye irritation if you’re not careful.

Pick sunglasses that cover your eyes fully and fit well. Look for lenses that block UV rays to protect your eyes from the sun and sturdy frames that can handle the race.

We offer sunglasses for adults and kids in white, red, blue, green, pink, and orange

6. Sunscreen

Speaking of sun, before you start an outdoor color run, remember to slather on some sunscreen! It’s important to shield your skin from UV rays, especially when you’re out in the open sun. Reach for a water-resistant or active specific sunscreen to keep yourself protected throughout the entire event.

7. Bandanabandana for color run

Bandanas are not just a stylish accessory. They help prevent color powder from reaching unwanted areas like your mouth and nose. While our color powder is food-grade and non-toxic, it’s not exactly something you’d want to snack on.

Wrapping a bandana around your hair acts as a protective barrier, shielding it from color powder and helping to prevent any lingering color, especially on lighter or color-treated hair. Our color powder doesn’t stain, but it may tint the skin or hair of those with very light complexions.

You can even preserve the colors of your bandana and create a colorful accessory as a memento of the color run. Here’s how:

  1. While you might be tempted to shake or brush off excess powder, it’s best to resist this urge. The more color powder that remains on the bandana, the better the final outcome will be. If some powder does come off, don’t worry too much, just handle it with care.
  2. For the best results, remove your bandana soon after the color run and store it in a zip-top bag to preserve its color.
  3. After returning home, lay the bandana flat on a surface.
  4. For easier cleanup, place it on a piece of moveable cardboard, a towel, or a newspaper. Spray the bandana thoroughly with white vinegar until it is completely saturated. As the color powder mixes with the vinegar, it will spread out and create a tie-dye effect on the fabric.
  5. Allow the bandana to fully dry in a flat position. This prevents the colors from blending together further and maintains their distinctiveness.
  6. To set the colors permanently, iron the dry bandana.
  7. For added protection, place a towel between the iron and the fabric to prevent direct contact and potential dampness from steam.
  8. Finally, toss the bandana in the dryer to further lock in the colors.

Keep in mind that while colors may fade slightly with each wash, they will retain their vibrancy overall.

8. Zip Top Bags

Bring ziplock bags to store your valuables like your phone, keys, and wallet to keep them from getting stained or damaged by the color powder.

9. Towel And Change of Clothes

When gearing up for a color run, don’t forget to toss a towel and a change of clothes in your bag. After all that colorful fun, you’ll want to freshen up a bit before heading home or diving into any post-race festivities.

Having a towel handy lets you quickly wipe off excess powder, so you don’t leave a rainbow trail everywhere you go. You can also use it as a barrier between you and your car seats.

Swapping out your powder-covered gear for something clean lets you relax and enjoy the rest of your day without any worries.

If you can’t go right home and shower, consider bringing makeup remover wipes or baby wipes with you to clean faces and hands.

10. Rubber Bracelets

Rubber bracelets are more than just fashion accessories at Color Runs; they serve several practical purposes, making them must-have items for participants:

Participants often cherish these bracelets as keepsakes, representing their accomplishments and the memories created during the event.

They also serve as promotional tools to raise awareness for charitable causes associated with the event. By wearing the bracelets during and after the Color Run, participants help spread the word and support the event’s objectives.

Some events provide VIP participants with rubber bracelets as a means of identification. They help event organizers verify your participation and ensure that you receive all associated benefits, like access to race amenities and post-race games and events.

Bonus Items: Funky and Fun Props

A color run is the perfect time to express your most colorful self! As you join fellow participants on the course, it’s your chance to let your personality shine. From rainbow tutus to feather boas and funky headbands, there’s no limit to how you can have fun with your look at a color run.

What To Bring To A Color Run?

One of the most magical aspects of the Color Run is the camaraderie and community among participants. As you mingle with fellow participants before and after the race, take the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for fun, fundraising, fitness, and color!

Whether you’re swapping costume ideas, sharing race day stories, or simply basking in the fun atmosphere, if you bring a positive outlook, a Color Run is a place where friendships are forged and memories are made
